Vision

As a school our intention is to increase the life chances and aspirations of our diverse group of students by raising standards of education and providing exceptional experiences. For the Sociology department this means preparing students with core sociological concepts knowledge needed to enhance their sociological imagination and thus their own lives.

In sociology we are passionate that our students learn reasons for social differences, including differences in social behaviour, reasons for the differentials in group opportunities and outcomes, the relevance of social hierarchies and social power in everyday life, how individuals and groups are shaped by larger social forces, the role of social institutions and the role of social structures. With this, we aim for our students to have a better understanding of their own life. We aim to develop a ‘sociological imagination’ in our students which allows them to recognise that their own experiences and circumstance are not unique; rather, there are patterns in behaviours, processes, and opportunities that lead to differences in people's lived experiences, in turn leading to disparities in outcomes. Therefore, in our sociological journey we aim for our students to want a more just, a more equitable, and a healthier world for themselves and others around them, and with this sociological knowledge, they are better poised to achieve this.
