The overarching intent of the history curriculum is designed to build and develop students’ cultural capital in order to enable them to understand the world around them today. They will use a range of concepts, historical skills and knowledge to form opinions, becoming competent and enthusiastic historians who question the world around them and the information they are given.
The choice of content, influenced by the National Curriculum, as well as reflecting the cohort of students, offers students a range of knowledge that crosses centuries; substantive concepts, which will be built upon across KS3, as well as cross-curricular links to cement the students’ learning. The substantive concepts such as democracy, power, religious conflict and dictatorships are reflective of the current political and social climate of the world today. As well as this, the content chosen allows the pupils to view a wider world history, as opposed to a solely narrow British focus. These concepts, as well as second order concepts, are developed across KS3 and therefore allow the pupils to succeed at GCSE, A-Level and beyond.
