School Closure Update
Following the latest government advice to enforce social distancing, we have been advised by the local authority to merge our provision with President Kennedy School. The local authority seeks to limit the number of open school buildings across the city, which will minimise the staff numbers required to keep sites open and reduce the risk of transmission to students and staff.
As a result, Barr’s Hill School will close at 4pm on Monday 30th March for the foreseeable future. Vulnerable students and students of key workers, alongside Barr’s Hills staff, will go to the President Kennedy School site from Tuesday 31st March.
This is a temporary measure. Barr’s Hill students are still Barr’s Hill students and, whilst staff from different schools will be working together throughout this time, our students will be looked after and taught by Barr’s Hill staff, until the government advises that schools can reopen as normal. For the small number of students currently attending, their days will feel the same as now, the only difference will be the site that the provision is delivered on.
Staff and students on site have had a busy and productive week with activities such as gardening, problem solving, research projects and team building alongside a range of curriculum lessons. This will all continue in the weeks ahead.
As the school will be closed from Tuesday, we have introduced a temporary voucher scheme for Free School Meals for the next 2 weeks until the national government scheme is ready. By Monday all eligible parents should receive a text explaining the arrangements, followed by a link to a supermarket voucher.
This will only be available to those eligible for a Free School Meal; if you do not currently receive this please go to www.coventry.gov.uk/freeschoolmeals to see if you can apply. It will be reassuring for the school to be able to know everyone who is eligible has been able to access this support. The voucher will be distributed to the primary contact we hold on school file, via a text message, although you can request an email instead.
We have worked hard to try and verify all the details we hold, but mobile numbers do change regularly, so please let us know ASAP if you have a new number. The primary carer for each child should receive the voucher so if you have had to change arrangements due to the current situation, please inform us. The voucher will be for a centrally located supermarket which should be accessible to the widest possible group. If you are self-isolating, we hope you will have friends or family who may be able to shop on your behalf.
We appreciate this may be a challenging time for all.
