World Book Day - 5th March 2015

150305_wbd_0Next Thursday, March 5th, is World Book Day. To celebrate we will be visited by Science Fiction Author Mark Griffiths.

We will also be distributing free £1 book tokens to years 7-9 which can be exchanged at many local bookshops for one of 10 specially selected books including the following:

150216_sas_0On the Monday of half-term we held the first of our '7 for year 7' transition events. It was a great day with 35 families attending...90 people altogether.

In the morning, the year 6 students went into workshops which included dance, animation, canvas painting and making a film soundtrack. Meanwhile, parents were taken on a treasure hunt/tour of the school by our year 7 students and we then had an inter-family quiz/bingo session.

Red Nose Day

Barr's Hill Staff and Students will be taking part in different activities to help raise money for this annual event. You can help support this charity day by taking part in activities such as:

1. Non-Uniform Day - £2.00 in non-uniform, £1.00 if wearing obvious Red or Fancy Dress and free if you wear your uniform

2. Staff and Student Cake sale during break / lunch – bring your pennies to buy lots of delicious cakes

3. You'll be able to buy one of the 9 Red Noses – £1

Kick Out Racism Visit

150209_kit_0On Friday the National organisation, Kick Out Racism, came to Barr's Hill for a workshop with students from all year groups. The students learnt all about the campaign from its importance to using new technology on the terraces to combat it.

The students were then supported by 2 Coventry City FC players, Reda Johnson and James Maddison, to produce posters on what they had learnt in the workshop. The winning posters will then be selected and used as the match day programme cover at the Coventry City vs Milton Keynes FC home match at the Ricoh arena.

Barr's Hill Fundraising Update

The final total sent off to Children in Need 2014 was £1,563.75. Many thanks to all those who contributed or raised money for such a great cause.

Visiting Independent Careers Advisor

On Monday 9th February Colette Wedgbrow formally of Connexions, will be in school for the third of five visits throughout the year. Colette has previously been responsible for managing the work experience programme for South Warwickshire schools and presently has her own business helping schools find work placements as well as undertaking health and safety visits to employers. Further, Colette has worked extensively with students aged 14-19 as a careers advisor and assisting with CV preparation and job applications.
