Planet Ice Reward Trip
Monday, 08 November 2010 10:22

icegroupOn Thursday 4th November 2010, we took over 80 deserving year 7 students on our first reward trip of the year to “Planet Ice”. We had 3 hours on the ice, and staff and students alike had a brilliant time. It was great to see students helping each other, and once on the ice, so many skaters were more than happy to spend time helping those who were less confident.

Only one in first aid and (for a short time) we won't mention which member of staff fell over!

Well done to all those who went...everyone is looking forward to the next rewards trip to the cinema...Sabrina and Mr Lavie have already put in a request for the new Harry Potter film!

See us in action in the Gallery.

Barr's Hill students hit all the right notes!
Tuesday, 02 November 2010 10:32

Barr's Hill MusicExciting developments are happening in the Music Department this term.  Since September, all Year 7 students have started to learn either the cornet or the clarinet; already the groups are able to play simple melodies that you would know such as Au Clair de la Lune.

Supported by Mr Hope, Mr Dumigan and music teachers from Coventry's Performing Arts Service, the students not only learn the theory of music through the National Curriculum, they also get to 'play it out' as they practise on their instruments.

Barr's Hill is the only known secondary school in the United Kingdom where students are able to experience this whole class approach to studying music and learning to play a musical instrument.  This innovative programme is certainly a big hit with students; during a recent visit from the Evening Telegraph, Ffion Sutton (Year 7) told reporters 'I'd never have thought of playing an instrument, let alone playing a cornet.  I've learned to read music as well.  It's given me more confidence'.
